I've blahblahblah on here many times about how comics need to work as a visual story-telling medium: at bare minimum the reader needs to be able to identify individual characters （unless you're doing something avant garde） and follow the action from panel to panel; next for me is body language and appropriate facial expressions， along with anatomy-based movements （this person is running， not kneeing themselves in the face）; and finally。。。use the structure of comics creatively to do what you want I've blahblahblah on here many times about how comics need to work as a visual story-telling medium: at bare minimum the reader needs to be able to identify individual characters （unless you're doing something avant garde） and follow the action from panel to panel; next for me is body language and appropriate facial expressions， along with anatomy-based movements （this person is running， not kneeing themselves in the face）; and finally。。。use the structure of comics creatively to do what you want to do and say what you want to say。Furudate usually hangs out high in the second level: I never have trouble telling the characters apart， the sequence across the page is easy to follow， the characters' facial expressions and gestures are clear， and their movements look natural。 （Good thing， too， considering that 85% of the manga involves people playing volleyball。） Occasionally they'll throw in a nice-looking two page spread or panel， but that's a pretty standard skill for a shonen mangaka。However， there's one point in this volume when Furudate transcends to that higher level， where a comic artist grabs all of the tools of their trade and does something that might be literally impossible to reproduce in any other medium， using it to tell you something about the characters and their feelings。 It's spread across four pages， which is unusual， and uses the very fact of turning the page to heighten the emotional impact。 Thumb flick and WHOA。 （view spoiler）[I am， of course， referring to chapter 324， right at the end of the Nekoma-Karasuno match where the scenery flips from a （nearly） full page spread of the action to an almost identical full page spread of the same teams playing a practice game together the previous summer。 It really highlights how much fun the teams are having， their history together as rivals， and the reminder that Karasuno has played them countless times （but never in an official match）， and they've never won。 （hide spoiler）]I love comics。 。。。more

That's a wrap on the Nekoma and Karasuno game！ Oh！ IT。 WAS。 SO。 GOOD！！！ Without spoilers， I am going to mainly discuss the Nekoma and Karasuno game with some slight references to what comes next。 Kenma's Monologue on the End of the Game"No matter which of us lost。。。Or which of us won。。。No one was going to die。 No one's coming back to life either。 Evil won't flourish across the land。 The world won't be destroyed。 It isn't like we had a grand adventure across a sprawling fantasy world。。。we just ra That's a wrap on the Nekoma and Karasuno game！ Oh！ IT。 WAS。 SO。 GOOD！！！ Without spoilers， I am going to mainly discuss the Nekoma and Karasuno game with some slight references to what comes next。 Kenma's Monologue on the End of the Game"No matter which of us lost。。。Or which of us won。。。No one was going to die。 No one's coming back to life either。 Evil won't flourish across the land。 The world won't be destroyed。 It isn't like we had a grand adventure across a sprawling fantasy world。。。we just ran in circles in a rectangle 18 meters wide。。。trying desperately hard to make a ball hit the floor in one spot and not hit the floor in another。 AND IT WAS THE MOST FUN I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE。" Can we appreciate this quote？ This shows tremendous growth and reflection on Kenma's part。 Kenma was lukewarm about volleyball or that is how it came across， but with this game we truly see Kenma's emotions。 This leads me to the next Kuroo and Kenma。 Kuroo and KenmaWhile I will talk more about this friendship in volume 36， I want to touch on it here with this piece of dialogue from them。 Kenma: "Hey， Kuro？"Kuroo: [Paying attention to Kenma]Kenma: "Thanks for teaching me how to play volleyball。 I like it。"Kuroo: "Huh？ Oh， uh。。。sure。"Kenma: [Starts to stand up and walk away] "Hup"Kuroo: "What？！ WHOA， WHOA， WHOA！ HOLD ON！ BACK UP！ BACK！ IT！ UP！"Kenma: "Huh？ Why are you so mad？"Well， he might be mad， Kenma， because you effectively said your piece and then did a mic drop！ I really like this， because we have seen Kuroo doubts about Kenma sticking around。 I really like this friendship， because it overall seems healthy dependable。 It sometimes feels like an older sibling and younger sibling， but it is solid。 The Shaking Hands of the TeamsI loved this！ They did the formal， but then they each did their thing。 The captains did the manly hug。 Yaku and Suga bumped shoulders。 Yamamoto and Tanaka had their bro moment。 Nishinoya and Yaku doing the libero respect thing。 Kuroo going over to Tsukishima， which was nice。 Kuroo， Yaku， Kai with their teammates was heartwarming。 Seeing the backs of Daichi， Suga， and Asahi with their arms around each other got to me！ The third years！ While that was touching， what really got to me was the coaches。 As Coach Ukai shake hands with Coach Nekomata we see Ikkei reaching out like he is shaking hands。 Then we see the hands shaking and cutaways to Coach Nekomata's and Ikkei's faces then to the cat and bird facing each other and it was just so beautiful！ I am tearing up just thinking about it。 Kai， Kuroo， and YakuThere was a little moment between these three that was very touching。 There was also a sketch of them in pose similar to Daichi， Suga， and Asahi。 Saeko's and Yamamoto's Sister's Respect for each otherThere was a great little moment between these two。 It was proud moment。 Kuroo and DaichiKuroo: "I am going to SLEEP。"Daichi: "Good。 Go sleep。"I like this， due to how I read it。 You know when in a fantasy novel they just fought a bad guy then bigger bad guy comes along and one of our heroes is like "I am going to go now。 You got this？" Then the other one is like "Yeah， I got this even I don't want to。" That is what this felt like to me。 Bokuto and AkaashiWhile can't say much about what happens after Nekoma and Karasuno， I can say we see some backstory about these characters。 What I like about this is we see why Akaashi sticks by Bokuto。 I see some people view this friendship/teammate relationship as Akaashi barely tolerating Bokuto， but with this volume I see a true frienship/mentorship。 I thought it was really good。 Verdict: Volume 38 is next！ 。。。more
